Frequently Asked Questions
Seeking help can feel like a daunting step, but it’s a crucial one towards personal growth and healing. Below are answers to some frequently asked questions that might help you feel more at ease about the counselling and psychotherapy process.
How do I know if I need counselling?
If you’re struggling to cope with your emotions, relationships or daily life, or if you feel stuck and unable to move forward, counselling may be beneficial. It can be a good idea to seek counselling if you find that your issues are interfering with your ability to function or enjoy life.
Can I speak to you before committing to a session?
I offer a free 15 minute telephone consultation for all new clients. We can use this time to briefly discuss what you’re looking for from therapy and enable you to feel comfortable for us to work together before booking a session.
How long is a counselling session?
A counselling session is 50 minutes long, which is referred to as the ‘therapeutic hour’.
How many sessions will I need?
Depending on what you want to achieve and what kind of issue you are exploring, counselling may last as little as 6 sessions or it may continue for several months or years. Problems that have been around a long time, especially those which are rooted early in life, or are more complex in nature (affecting many different parts of your life), generally take longer to resolve.
Will what I say in sessions be kept confidential?
Everything we talk about in our sessions will remain strictly confidential. There are two situations where there are limitations in regards to confidentiality. I have a legal duty to report anything to do with terrorism or if you were to disclose matters involving a serious/life-threatening risk of harm to self or others. If something like that came up, I would talk with you about it. Where possible, we would not break confidence without your prior knowledge and, ideally, consent.
What should I expect from my first counselling session?
It’s understandable and completely normal to feel a bit apprehensive before your first therapy session, especially if you have never had counselling before.
In your first session, we will discuss your reasons for seeking counselling, a bit of your personal history, and what you would like to get from therapy. The first session is a way for us to get to know each other and also for you to make sure that I am the right person for you.
We will also discuss things such as therapeutic boundaries, confidentiality and what to do if you need to cancel or rearrange a booked session.
How frequently can I/should I have counselling sessions?
I offer sessions on a weekly, fortnightly or monthly basis. If you are new to therapy, you may wish to begin with weekly sessions and as needed, these can then be reduced to fortnightly or monthly sessions after a period of time. However it is your preference and dependent on your needs and the financial viability of regular sessions.
Where are you Located?
In-person sessions are conducted in my counselling room at Sycamore House, Kingswood, Bristol: https://www.sycamorehousebristol.co.uk/contact and I conduct online and telephone sessions from a private room in my home.
